Wednesday, December 12, 2007 It has been 136 days since I posted a journal entry on the website. For that, I apologize.
"Busy Bee" would not be the words to describe me since late August; most of that has to do with things outside the wrestling world, but those usually end up being more important that what goes on inside the infamous squared circle. Speaking of bees, do you know that when bees get infested with mites (which is known to happen), beekeepers cover them in powdered sugar to rid them of the infestation?
If only more people realized how amazingly useful and multi-talented Sugar can be.
On November 11, Mrs. Sugar gave birth to our second daughter, Tegan. Here she is with me and her big sister, Zoe; the girls are wearing some pretty wicked Marty Sugar shirts, that can be found at my merchandise site.
Meanwhile, I had an amazing month of August, as far as wrestling is concerned. Six matches over a three-day weekend at the Vancouver Island Exhibition in Nanaimo. Although I only won one of those matches (to go with four losses and a draw), I garnered some serious experience by facing the likes of Scotty Mac, Ice and DK Roc. Plus, the ongoing friend-foe relationship with Kid Xtreme added a new chapter: after we battled to a No-Contest due to outside interference from Antwang and Ice, The Kid and I teamed together to face those two; unfortunately, it was in a losing effort, after much interference.
At the last show of the weekend, The Kid and I found ourselves both challenging for Scotty Mac's ECCW Hardcore Title in a Triple-Threat Match. The leader of Chill Town was in The Kid's ear, though, as he stabbed me in the back and turned the bout into a Handicap Match. Scotty swerved The Kid in the end, but I guarantee you this much: The Kid is now permanently on my Shit List. I look forward to handing him his ass in 2008: over and over again.
I also started teaming with Deuce Savage, and our debut in Surrey was in impressive one: we shrugged off some early miscommunication to manhandle La Sombra & Volcano. But that team wasn't meant to be, unfortunately, as personal family issues have kept the Deuce away from wrestling for the past four months. He did just return to action on December 7 against Scotty Mac, so we shall see what the New Year holds for us.
September saw me face off in Comox against a newcomer from Australia: Rick "The Weapon" X. This guy has got some amazing talent, and I hope he sticks around the Pacific Northwest for some time ... at least long enough for me to avenge his suprise submission victory!
Things quieted down for me, wrestling-wise, in October and November (more on that in my "Year In Review" commentary; coming soon, I swear!), but I did get a "shot" at the infamous ECCW Jobber Title, which has been held by "Southern Comfort" Ray Brooks for over two years now. Ray doesn't wrestle very often, but he is still a tough customer: he nearly beat me in Abbotsford, but I was able to eke out a win and keep that hideous gold belt around Ray's waist.
Yes, fans, the Jobber Title is "won" by losing. Go figure. Even more interesting is that Ray won a match on December 7; albeit a tag match, teaming with Disco Fury against Freddy Funk & VK. What does "VK" stand for, you ask? It's the guy formerly known as Volcano, don't you know. Since Ray pinned Freddy, I guess that makes him the new Number One Contender for the Jobber Title?
December saw me face Sid Sylum in Nanaimo, after Sid cut a marble-mouthed promo declaring himself the new Vancouver Island Champion. There hasn't been a title specific to the Island since 2001, when the old NWA Vancouver Island Title (last held by Rockford), was decommissioned; granted, Sid won the 2007 Vancouver Island Cup Tournament at the VIEX in August, but does that mean he can have a belt made for himself, too?
I took umbrage with Sid, and his attitude towards the Island, so I came out and challenged him to put the Title on the line. Not only did he refuse, but his fellow Chill Town teammate, Azeem The Dream, attacked me from behind and declared the match a Three-Way Dance! Needless to say, this was in reality a 3-on-1 Handicap Match, with Nikki Matthews interjecting herself during the match, as well. After some miscommunication between Azeem and Sid, followed by Sid bailing out of the ring to avoid the Sugarbuster, I got the three-count on Azeem in front of the hometown fans. This should make me the Number One Contender for the Vancouver Island Title, but we shall see what transpires in the New Year.
Finally, we are caught up to my latest match: December 9 in Esquimalt. This was for a new B.C. affiliate of the Pure Wrestling Association, which has its headquarters in Ontario. I faced "The Prince of Power" Lak Saddartha in the opening match of a four-man tournament to crown the first-ever PWA Coastal Mountains Champion. The show started with the pro-Lak crowd (he's Victoria-born) mocking me because my music didn't play ... but then, not suprisingly, Lak's played no problem.
I was not impressed, so I went on the offensive early. But Lak tossed me around a bit, so I slowed things down and started fighting dirty: this is for a title, after all. I had things in hand when I dropped Lak with a Sugarbuster, so I went up top to finish things with the Sugar High. The ropes were slippery, though, so I paused to collect myself; I also changed my mind and went for a flying splash ... but Lak moved and I crashed hard on the canvas. When I hit the mat, those nagging rib injuries came to life; they were only exacerbated when Lak sent me flying with a huge F-5 that got him the victory.
It's not every day I get tossed around like a rag doll ... Lak Saddartha is one powerful sumbitch, and he perservered over Eddie Osbourne to become the first PWA Coastal Mountains Champion. I will need to re-think my gameplan, if and when I face that big bastard again.
Post-match, my reaggravated ribs were causing me some serious concern, so I spoke to my doctor in Nanaimo. He immediately set me up with a surgeon, and I am currently home convalescing after "minor" day surgery that happened yesterday (December 11). Needless to say, the year ended with that loss to Lak, but it was definitely an interesting 2007 ... to say the least! I'll go into more detail in my "Year In Review" commentary, which will be out very shortly.
Until next time, Sugar Addicts.
